12 Jan Sweet Rebellion Sewing Challenge

It was a late December afternoon when we first met Mike Flynn, sent here by another local quilt shop. They suggested he come by to introduce himself to the “new kid on the block”. He wasted no time! While our budget frowned at another unannounced sales rep, we turned a blind eye and let him through the door ~ barely. Now, we let Mike know right away that traditional isn’t our jam, so he shouldn’t waste his time, or ours, expecting an order. With eyebrow raised and a glint in his eye he said, “I have just the thing for you then”. Out came the headers for Ink & Arrow Fabrics. While I resisted the temptation to order this super fun line of fabrics at market, faced with them a second time, I caved. Damn you Mike. Someone, give that man a promotion.

Not more than a few days later, I received a lovely e-mail from Courtney Tkacz from Wives of Whitewood asking if I would be interested in creating something with the Sweet Rebellion collection by Felicia Gallo for Ink & Arrow for a sewing challenge. It took a few exchanges for me to fully understand why she contacted me. I assumed there was a connection with my order. Nope – just a happy coincidence! She likes my work found on the CloBird Designs website. No wonder I was confused. Duh.

I settled on a placemat and napkin set for my sewing challenge ~ a perfect compliment to my chef self and love for all things food related. As my husband and parents are cyclists, I chose the bike chains and peonies for my challenge. I loved the juxtaposition of cold metal chains and delicate flowers! I selected a few other coordinating prints to round out my fabric pull for this project.

The materials below will make 2 placemats and 2 napkins. I hope you enjoy the tutorial – and stay tuned, I’ll be posting a favorite recipe tomorrow – so call that BFF and get ready for a quick project and some yummies.

Materials for 2 sets:

• 1/3 yard fabric A (Peonies and Chains in Light Pink)
• 1/2 yard fabric B (Pixies Square Dot Blender in Hot Pink)
• 1/2 yard fabric C (Chain Scroll in Fuchsia)
• 1/2 yard fabric D (Packed Lily of the Valley in Pink)
• 2/3 yard medium weight interfacing (such as Pellon ShapeFlex 101)
